PVC Pipe Leak Detection & Repair in El Monte, CA
Summer is the season that breaks plastic here. Months of inland valley sun bake exposed PVC brittle, Santa Ana winds strip the last moisture out of the soil around buried runs, and irrigation systems work their hardest exactly when their pipes are weakest. By September, the cracks have usually announced themselves.
Where the Plastic Lives in Your System
PVC and its relatives carry more of your water than you might think. White PVC runs irrigation mains, laterals, and pool plumbing. Black ABS handles most drain, waste, and vent lines in homes from the seventies onward. Gray schedule 80 shows up at pool equipment pads, and flexible poly feeds drip zones. Supply lines inside the house are a different story: PVC does not belong on pressurized hot water, and where a past remodel put it there, that is a finding worth correcting.
Each plastic fails its own way, and the material at the failure point tells us most of the diagnosis before any tool comes out.
How Plastic Fails in This Climate
Sunlight is enemy number one. UV exposure makes rigid PVC chalky and brittle, which is why above-ground risers and pool pad plumbing crack years before buried pipe of the same age. Enemy two is mechanical: roots do not pierce PVC so much as crush and displace it, shearing joints as they grow. Enemy three is the joint itself, since a solvent weld that was dry-fitted, under-primed, or rushed decades ago eventually lets go along the glue line.
Thermal cycling finishes the list. Long hot summers and cool winter nights work every fitting through expansion and contraction, and the fittings, not the straight pipe, are where the vast majority of PVC leaks live.
Finding Cracks in Pipe That Carries No Signal
Plastic complicates locating in one specific way: you cannot induce a tracing signal on it directly. The workarounds are standard practice for us. A signal-carrying fish tape or sonde travels inside the pipe to map its route. Acoustic listening still hears pressurized escapes through soil. And for drain-side plastic, the camera goes in and looks at the failure directly, with a locator reading the camera head's position from the surface.
Irrigation plastic gets zone-level pressure isolation on top, which corners a leak to one lateral out of many. The full method set for sprinkler systems lives under our sprinkler leak service, and drain-side plastic failures continue under drain leak work once the camera confirms them.
Repairs That Outlast the Original Joint
PVC rewards doing the small things right. Repairs here get full primer-and-cement joints with correct cure time, schedule-matched fittings, and expansion room where a run sees temperature swings. Exposed replacements go in with UV-rated material or protective wrap, because installing bare white PVC in full sun just schedules the next failure. Root-damaged sections get rerouted where the root will win again, rather than rejoined in the same losing position.
Around the Pioneer Park area and El Monte's later-built streets, plastic dominates the outdoor plumbing, and a single visit often finds one failed fitting plus two neighbors on the same aging glue line. You decide whether we fix one or all three, with prices for each in front of you.
The Cheap Habit That Saves PVC Systems
Walk your irrigation while it runs, one zone at a time, twice a year. You are looking for heads that mist instead of spray, soil bubbling at a fitting, a lateral line's path staying damp between cycles, and risers that weep at the threads. Five minutes per zone catches most plastic failures while they are still one-fitting fixes.
What you cannot see is the buried main between the valve manifold and the zones, which can bleed quietly between runs. A bill creeping upward through summer with a clean house check points there. Report the pattern to (626) 898-6169 and the diagnostic starts at the right pipe instead of the whole property. For active gushers, the irrigation shutoff valve, usually beside the house main, stops the loss while you call (626) 898-6169.

Can a cracked PVC fitting be glued back together?
No. Solvent cement works by fusing clean, matched surfaces during assembly, and it cannot rebuild a cracked or contaminated joint. The reliable repair is cutting the failed fitting out and installing new pipe and fittings with proper primer and cement. Patch products and wraps are roadside-spare solutions at best, and we treat them as temporary if we use them at all.
Why do my sprinkler pipes keep breaking in the same area?
Repeat failures in one zone usually have a repeat cause. Common ones: a root system growing through the run, soil that shifts more in that spot, water hammer from a fast valve, or pressure above what the laterals were built for. Fixing the pipe without fixing the cause schedules the next break. We look for the pattern and quote the correction alongside the repair.
Is ABS drain pipe the same as PVC?
They are different plastics with different cements, and they should not be solvent-welded to each other directly. ABS is the black drain pipe common in this area's later homes; PVC is the white pressure and irrigation pipe. Transitions between them need the correct coupling. If a past repair glued them together, it is a known weak point worth checking: call (626) 898-6169 and have it looked at before it lets go.
